Right now, we are witnessing not the separation of Hamas and the local population, but the growing integration of the two, with likely growing recruitment for Hamas. The only viable way to separate Hamas from the local population is politically. This could, over time, separate Hamas from the local population more and more, and so lead to significant success. Support among self-identified Democrats for political violence grew by about 250%, according to the study. The spike was most pronounced among self-identified Democrats: in January, 7% of Democrats supported using political violence against lawmakers, and that number climbed to 16% in June. By contrast, the support for political violence against Congress among self-identifying Republicans increased by 50%. Specifically, the survey found roughly 4% of Americans — an estimated 12 million people — supported using violence to return Trump to office in April.
